MEDIA EVALUATION

Media Evaluation Final x

Thursday 6 May 2010

After showing our film opening to an audience with the newly added production company titles. There was a suggestion that with the flashing images of the production companies backgrounds there may be a risk concerned with people who suffer from epilepsy. Therefore, after researching into epilepsy on http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/ we decided to add a warning at the start of our film to inform the audiences of the use of flashing images.

Our own Production Company

We finally came to a conclusion to the names of our production companies.
Originally, we had the name J.E.D.I Productions which was the letter of all of our names, however after adding a Jedi logo to the background of the title shot we decieded it looked unprofessional and got rid of the company.
>Later, we came up with the name Pandemonium Productions and a Nevaeh Film (which is heaven spelt backwards) both of these titles had a much more professional quality to them and after placing them on a flashing black and white screen in a white font, our group was very pleased with our production company names.

Thriller Production Companies

It was quite hard to find particular production companies that specifically distributed Thrillers on their own. However, there where a few which did distribute a majority of Thrillers as well as other film genres such as horrors.
New Line Cinema would be the most likely production company to distribute our
film. They are very successful company and have distributed many well known suspense and thriller films such as Number 23 (2007),The Butterfly Effect (2004), Se7en (1995)
and The Wicker Man (2006).

I research in other prestigious production companies such as Lionsgate, Paramount Vantage and Miramax Films. But many of these production companies mainly focused on distributing films from the horror genre rather than Thrillers.

Also I saw that many of the production companies have either the title then production company or films after them so when creating our own company we will need to take this into account.

Title Name

Our group finally came up with the title for our film. We decided to name our film 'Ripper' by calling the film 'Ripper' it gives the audience an idea of the genre of the film, and also that the film is about Jack the Ripper.
This name suited our film rather than the others as it includes the killers name and also the way in which he killed his victims by ripping their bodies apart.
I really loved the title of the film it is very catchy and is quick and sharp which will grab the attention of the audience.

Ideas for Film Title

Our group has been trying to think of a name for our Jack the Ripper themed film.
Some of the names that we thought to call it were:
* The Silver Knife - as this was the main weapon that Jack the Ripper used. However, we thought that the audience would not immediately associate the film title with Jack the Ripper.
* 1988 - which is the year that the murders took place, but in order to relate the film with the title we would need to explore the year in more depth and explicitly make the audience aware that the murders took place in 1888. Which I personally do not feel is needed and that we should think of a more catchy, gripping title name.

Finally, Dom watched the a comedy film 'Scary Movie' which mocks horror films. She really liked the opening title shot of the knife cutting through the screen and the text (Scary Movie) come up. She showed the rest of the group and we all loved the credits, which have given us some more ideas for our own.

Music Software

This is the software we used for our music instead of Garage Band. It's called Cubase Essential 5.

Music

Here are the different instruments that we used on the music software to create our music.

Final Film Product (HD)

From our last draft we decide to add a warning shot at the beginning of our film for people who have photosensitive epilepsy to be aware that there are flashing images.

Im really pleased with our final draft to our opening. From looking at the first draft to our final one we have made lots of improvements and have given the film a more professional look. Im am very proud of our film product and the changes that we have made.

Draft 9

After watching the last film edit back we decided that the production company did not look very professional, so we changed the production companies name and background. We also added in a film name presents. The credits have changed in fonts, size, length and position aswell as adding titles to the begining of the names.

Draft 8

We added our a production company with a logo at the begining of the film to make it appear more professional. We came up with the production name J.E.D.I as it is a combination of letters from our names.

Draft 7

We finally finished the music and was able to introduced the music to our film. However, we noticed that their is still some sounds from filming which need to be changed to mute. The music also has to be made to sync the in time with the camera shots better.

Draft 6

Again we decided to change to fonts and added in more fade transitions.

Draft 5

We have played around with the credits and changed them by making them longer when appearing on the screen, where they are placed in camera shots and also the font has changed. Also we tried to see where a plan black screen with the font, or the font on top of the moving image looked better. Finally we have added extra shots where the camera over laps two images for example in the newspaper sequence.

Draft 4

In draft 4 we decided to add new credits and also changed how the font came on screen, the font , colouring, size and the time they appeared on screen.

Ripper Draft 3.

This editing was put up as we sharpened the editing and made some changes to the camera shots.

Changing Credits 2

After changing the font and showing the film opening to an audience, the feedback was that the font was harder to read in certain peoples names as their was a thin black outline around them. Therefore, we decided to keep the font in red but got rid of the thin black outline and made it all red instead. By changing the colour and making the font slightly bigger the font does not blend into the background as much and was clearer to read.

Changing Credits

Originally for our credits we used the font Papyrus that was in iMovie however after we decided that the font we had chosen did not fit well with the time period that our film opening was set in.

However, in iMovie we were limited to the fonts that we could use and many of them were very modern.
We later found a website http://www.1001freefonts.com/ which we could download fonts from.
We were trying to find a creepy font that looked similar to the handwriting of Jack the Ripper, we tried many different fonts such as 'A Charming Font', 'Slammer Tag', 'Deportees' and others. Most of them looked creepy and handwritten but either the whole group did not agree on the font or the font did not fit properly with time era.
Finally we found the font 'Schoon' which we all agreed that the font looked similar to Jack the Rippers and suited the time period of 1888.

Rape scene Cut

When we first filmed our opening we decided to show the whole rape scene where we see the actual attack on the victim. However, we later decided to cut the rape scene out and just have the attack implied.

By having the rape taken out it lets the audiences imagination run wild into what happened to the vitctim and it also leaves the audience on the edge as it is only the opening of the film. So the audience think they get to find out what happened to the victim if the continue to watch.

This is from the bbfc website, I search the film which was related to our own Jack the Ripper film, it is "From Hell" (2001).

This film has been given certificate 18 due to strong violence, drug use and language.

However, for our own film we have decided to have the certificate 15. This is due to the fact that there is only violence and language is appropriate to the cerificate rating and the horror is implied. By having our film at a certificate rating of 15 our film can viewed by a wider audience than if it was an 18.

Below is the bbfc cerfitcate 15 guidelines that are appropiarte to our film or that our film may contain:

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must notpromote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easilyaccessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example,‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may beacceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeateduse of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but withoutstrong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.SexSexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptableunless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose issexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the inflictionof pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely tobe acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is alsounlikely to be acceptable. Garageband at the CLC Centre

On wednesday our media class went to the CLC centre to get some help and guidence on how to use garageband. While we were being taught how to use the music software properly we also began to play around and make our own thriller film music.
In my group we all were using very similar sounds and loops from garageband and Michelea came up with the best and most creepy sounding music that we think will work well with our film opening, when we receive our saved pieces of work from the centre we will play the music with our film and see how the two pieces fit together.

Credits & Title

Last night we finished the credits for our film opening.
Firstly we wanted to have our names incorparated with the newpapers articles however it was hard to place the names and titles in the right places. So now we decided to place the titles in with diffrent shots. For example one of the actors names comes up when they are on screen and goes when they exit the shot.
The credits and titles have all been edited to fade in and fade out of the shots. By using a fade in and out it fits in with film as Jack the Ripper keeps appearing and disappearing in the film, the credits match Jack the Rippers movements.
The font called papyrus and is in red, we decided to use the font has it look almost scribbled down as if Jack the Ripper may have written it himself. Also we decided to use the colour red to represent blood and anger as it fits in with the film.
We also concluded on a name for the film, we decided to call it 'Ripped' as it ties in with the murderers name and what he done to his victims.

Avatar

Last night I went to watch the film Avatar, lots of my friends and family had already been to see it and I had always heard that it was an amazing film to watch. Everyone said it was even better when watched in 3D so I did. Avatar was brilliant throughout the film I was completely mesmorised and captured in the world that had been created.
The storyline was great and almost had a current, up to date theme about deforestation. The characters and creatures where so imaginative in the world Pandora. Also, the 3D effects just made the film even more amazing.
Another part of the film i really like was the music, it always blended and highlighted with the scenes that where happening so well. And even though there was quite alot of high action scenes in the film the music really helped the action going.
In our own film i think that the music is quite hard to make or find. And I believe that the music is a key part of our film. And we need to really focus on how to make the music as effect and strong as we can.
However I honestly recomend everyone going to see Avatar.
